[Santa Cruz, California]: Foolscap Press, 2009. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Gotthold, Peggy. No. 34 of 110 copies (including 10 hors commerce), quarto size, [51] pp. "Herakles and the Eurystheusian Twelve-Step Program" is a comedic dialogue between Herakles (Hercules) and Eurystheus, two heroes from Greek mythology set against each other as rivals by Zeus and Hera. The twelve-step program here refers to the Twelve Labours of Herakles, heroic tasks Herakles performs as acts of penance, serving under the direction of his cousin, King Eurystheus. The text in this book consists of imagined conversations between Herakles and Eurystheus regarding the Twelve Labours, and is a delightful mixture of humour and mythology. Written by Lawrence G. Van Velzer, this volume contains illustrations by Peggy Gotthold, who owns Foolscap Press together with Van Velzer; Gotthold creates illustrations in the style of Greek vase-painting, with imagery corresponding to each of the Twelve Labours printed in the shape of a vase with black line work. ___DESCRIPTION: Full natural linen, cream paper label with title in brown and black and a black line drawing of a lion's head by Peggy Gotthold inset on the front board, brown paste-down endpapers, title page in brown and black with line drawing by Gotthold, two-colour vase illustrations by Gotthold throughout; Curtis Holcomb text and Hahnemuhle Bugra papers, quarto size (11.25" by 6.25"), 51 unnumbered pages, in thirteen fold-out sections with three to five pages each, tipped onto one side of the brown Bugra paper, one of 110, of which 10 are hors commerce, this number 34.
