The Snails is a short story by Patricia Highsmith (author of The Talented Mr. Ripley) about giant snails with huge teeth that inhabit a remote island. When an out-of-shape professor decides to visit the island in hopes of capturing one of the snails in order to secure fame for himself, his plans go awry. A seemingly peculiar topic for a story, it was perfect for Highsmith who kept snails as pets and was known to take them to parties on leaves of lettuce in her handbag. The book is housed in a brick red cloth box with a cast-paper sculpture of a snail shell to the top cover. The book is bound in tan cloth with an illustration of a snail pasted down to the front cover. Within the folds of the accordion structure binding are smaller gatherings of pages, which include the text. No. 34 of 110 copies (including 10 hors commerce), quarto size, [51] pp. "Herakles and the Eurystheusian Twelve-Step Program" is a comedic dialogue between Herakles (Hercules) and Eurystheus, two heroes from Greek mythology set against each other as rivals by Zeus and Hera. The twelve-step program here refers to the Twelve Labours of Herakles, heroic tasks Herakles performs as acts of penance, serving under the direction of his cousin, King Eurystheus. The text in this book consists of imagined conversations between Herakles and Eurystheus regarding the Twelve Labours, and is a delightful mixture of humour and mythology.
Written by Lawrence G. Van Velzer, this volume contains illustrations by Peggy Gotthold, who owns Foolscap Press together with Van Velzer; Gotthold creates illustrations in the style of Greek vase-painting, with imagery corresponding to each of the Twelve Labours printed in the shape of a vase with black line work.
