Title page in full color lithograph, the other leaves, holding mounted grass specimens, with color decorations, including gilt borders and large initials; text in German, English, and French. Later green cloth, gilt title on spine; portion of several specimens missing, several other broken, some offset from specimens, but a very good copy of this elaborate production and quite scarce. Housed in a custom board slipcase (edges worn). First edition (both the title page and the presentation leaf are dated 1871; no later dates are present), this copy with a printed leaf of presentation to the United States Consul in Germany, Mr. Aaron Seeley. We have located one copy of this edition (National Library of Medicine). OCLC locates two copies of an 1876 printing (San Diego Natural History Museum, Texas A&M) and one copy of an 1872 printing with title page in German (New York Botanical Garden).

Engraved and delicately hand-coloured by Johann Carl Bock, Johan Georg Sturm, Johann Georg Klinger, and others, after drawings by Esper.
Esper's illustrations depict the complete life cycles of many European butterflies and moths, many along with their host plants. Many specimens are shown in pupa, larva (caterpillar) and adult forms, while some adult butterflies and moths show alternate sides (upper and lower) of their wings on the left and right wings.

With an account of Buffon's life by William Wood. It is rare to find this set with hand colouring. In contemporary full speckled calf bindings that have been rebacked to provide new spines with gilt-lined raised bands and title and volume labels. The original boards have scuffing and pitting, and there is light wear at edges and corners, but the bindings are in very good clean condition. Endpapers are marbled and some of the front pastedowns have a scuffed area indicating the removal of bookplates. 2 of the volumes have the armorial bookplate of the Right Hon. Sir Robert Peel, Bart, who was Prime Minister 1834-5. and 1841-6 and is viewed as the founder of the modern British police force.
