Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, 1971. 1st edition. Soft Cover. Fine. "Few characters in American history are more closely identified with a particular city than is Abraham Lincoln with Springfield, Illinois. There was much sentiment, but also much truth, in Lincoln's farewell to his friends and neighborsÉWhat kind of town Springfield was in Lincoln's day tells much of the kind of man Lincoln was. The two sories are inextricably interwoven in the documents and newspapers which Paul Angle explored in gathering the homely but fascinating data for his book." Description:
Paul Angle's Here I Have Lived takes its title from a phrase in Lincoln's Farewell Address to the people of Springfield, IL. This is a careful account of the community where Lincoln rose from relative obscurity to the most powerful office in the county. More than a major contribution to Lincolniana, it is a study of the founding and growth of a typical American frontier community.

Among Paul Angle's titles were Executive Secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association, Illinois State Historian, and Director of the Chicago Historical Society. He was the author of over 20 books about Lincoln and Illinois History. Reprinted by Abraham Lincoln Book Shop.

Minor shelf and storage wear, else as new; d.j.

Mild jacket edgewear. Handsome, tight second printing of this important 1935 study. Addressed to John Valentine of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Very good. Two file holes near top; faint original folds. On "Illinois State Historical Library" letterhead listing Angle as State Historian, he chats with this member of their Advisory Council about ISHL issues, about Alfred Whital Stern (1881-1960, wealthy businessman and Lincoln collector extraordinaire), and sets a date for the Council's next meeting. Signed simply "Paul" in blue ink. Lovely and unusual copy of an uncommon title.
