About This Item

Book is no longer available. Amsterdam: Uitgeverij Contact, 1947. First Edition, First Printing. First Printing of Anne Franks diary, in the original Dutch, one of only 1500 copies printed. True first edition published in June 1947. All later Dutch printings indicate such on both the title and copyright pages, this is the First Printing. Preceding the American (English language) edition (The Diary of Anne Frank) by five years. Bound in the original cream-colored paper boards, with a terra-cotta rectangle in the center of the front cover. With a portrait of Anne Frank, 2 photographs of the shelter, a plan of 'Het Achterhuis' and 2 facsimiles of author's handwriting. Roughly 7 inches tall. In very good condition and exceptionally well preserved. There is some light generalized wear to the binding. The hinges are very sound. There is a small split at the top of the spine, which is hard to see in the pictures, and a few stains closer to the base of the spine, some light soiling, as is shown, and is common to this book, considering that it is bound in cream colored paper boards of postwar quality. The pages are lightly browned, but very fresh and sound. No creases, or chips. Near free of foxing. Appears unread, and with no previous signs of ownership, or previous owner's names. In very good condition, especially considering the fragility of the paper boards, and the poor quality of paper used in the postwar days. A clean and tight copy. A very well preserved example of this very rare title, of the best condition currently on the market. Lacking the exceedingly rare dust jacket. This is the First Printing of Anne Frank's Diary. Rare. Anne began her new diary on her 13th birthday, June 12, 1942, by writing, I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support. (Page 1 bears a facsimile of this entry.) Only a month later, Anne and her family would go into hiding. Anne envisioned the future publication of her diaryin fact, she began editing the text before the familys arrest on August 4, 1944 (three days after the diarys last entry)and chose the title Het Achterhuis (The Annex) herself. After its initial release, the book was translated and published in more than 60 languages. Upon its publication in English, Eleanor Roosevelt called the diary one of the wisest and most moving commentaries on war. It remains one of the most widely read books in the world. Anne Franks diary is too tenderly intimate a book to be frozen with the label classic, and yet no lesser designation serves (Books of the Century, 180). Anne, together with her sister Margot, was murdered in Bergen Belsen in 1945. Her diary has been praised for its literary qualities and has become one of the most important symbols of the Holocaust, still attracting millions of readers. a book which continues to hold its place at the top of many literary lists: the most famous diary of modern times, the most famous work by a teenager, most famous work on the Holocaust, most famous 20th Century work by a Jew. The full title is Het Achterhuis. Dagboekbrieven 14 July 1942 1 Augustus 1944 (The Annex: Diary Notes from 14 June 1942 1 August 1944). All books are professionally wrapped and padded, to help ensure safe handling during transit. We regularly ship internationally.
