A new chocolate ice product from America advertised in Amsterdam.

- Lithographed poster - André Vlaanderen (1881-1955). Het nieuwste snufje uit Amerika: Norico, choco-glace. Amsterdamsche Banketbakkers IJscompagnie (IJsco). Fine lithograph in colour. (Amsterdam, ca. 1928-1929). 67 x 36 cm.

Very rare poster, no other copy found. Sadly I could not yet find information about this new chocolate ice, allegedly invented in America. However the story of the 'IJscompagnie' has been well documented. The 'IJscompagnie' (= Ice Company) was a brand name of a company of confectioners who operated ice cream carts. This name was shortened into 'IJsco' and became the household name in the Netherlands for ice sold in scoops. The oldest Dutch 'IJscompagnie' was probably that of Amsterdam. The newspaper 'De Courant' of August 28, 1913 mentions on that day the opening of a vanilla ice factory by the 'N.V. Automatische IJscompagnie der Amsterdamsche Banketbakkers' at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal 320, in Amsterdam. The poster designer André Vlaanderen (Amsterdam 1881- Bruges 1955) was a Dutch graphic artist, known for his many advertisement designs. After his education at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam, he worked as a graphic designer for the wellknown architect Eduard Cuypers from 1899 to 1905. After 1905 he started successfully his own bussines, making posters, all kinds of advertising material, bookdesigns, etcetera. In 1929 he moved to Belgium (Ghent and Bruges). - Very tiny retouches in outer lower corners, vague former fold in middle, backed with Chinese paper. - Good copy.

PROVENANCE: From the estate of the artist; thence by descent. - Cf. Newspaper article by Ewoud Sanders: https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/1995/07/20/waarom-een-ijsco-ijsco-heet-7275008-a1087667 and article by Roland de Bonth: https://neerlandistiek.nl/2021/05/met-de-y-van-ysco/

1691 1ed Maurice Diocesan Episcopacy Anglican Bishops Great Ejection Act 1662
In late 17th-century England, numerous Protestant and Anglican ministers began publishing books in response to the Great (minister) Ejection Act of 1662. David Clarkson and Welsh minister Henry Maurice were two such names. Maurice's "Defence of Diocesan Episcopacy" was a direct response to Clarkson's "Primitive Episcopacy" both of which argued over which powers and jurisdictions bishops should have.

Includes sections on Routes to the Falls; Directions to Visiters [sic]; Historical Notices; The Falls (Situation, Latitude, etc.); The Islands, Bridges, Staircases, etc.; Interesting Objects of Visit; Aboriginal Remains; Battle Grounds, Forts, etc. "The first guide-book to Niagara Falls was published in 1834, though for many years the travelers' hand-books and tour-books had contained a good deal relative to the Niagara region, both historical and descriptive. Horatio A. Parsons published a Niagara guide in this year, and claimed it was the first book of the kind. Ingraham's book appeared in July, and was the outcome of studies he had begun in 1833. It was a thoroughly original work, not the least useful feature being a list of 135 works which he had consulted, ranging in date from 1660 to 1833 -- the first bibliography of the… Read More

[Washington, D.C.] & New York: U.S. Treasury Dept., United States Printing & Lithograph Co., 1918. One large original poster, 20 x 30 in., colour lithograph (toning to fore-edges, couple minor closed tears neatly repaired on verso, minor chipping to corners, oxidization of paper on verso), still a remarkably bright copy with little sunning to the image retaining the original richness. First edition of this very popular poster executed by Haskell Coffin in 1918 employing the image of Joan of Arc to pull at the heartstrings of American women to buy War Savings Stamps for the war effort. Cecil B. DeMille’s 1916 epic film, Joan: The Woman had generated so much press coverage, and movie lovers that Joan of Arc had become a household name. War Savings Stamps were inexpensive, and after completing a booklet could be converted into War Bonds -- these drives funded two-thirds of the American war effort in World War I.
