About This Item

Philadelphia: David McKay, 1917. First edition thus, first printing thus. VERY GOOD. N C Wyeth. HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents ROBIN HOOD by PAUL CRESWICK. This is the FIRST APPEARANCE of the eleven full page color illustrations by AMERICA'S GREATEST ILLUSTRATOR, N. C. WYETH (who was also a realist painter, and whose works command a high price today) The eleven illustrations (which were engraved by the Beck Engraving Company) include those on the front cover and the front and back end papers Paul Creswick, who was the published author of a number of children's books, penned this version of ROBIN HOOD at the turn of the twentieth century. His version of the tale "brings it to life, and the luminous Wyeth illustrations complete the picture" 7 1/8" x 9 1/2", 362 pages, no DJ. Book in VERY GOOD condition. Pages (with gold gilded top edges) = very good: moderate tanning to edges, bottoms, tops, small dedication to owner on first ffep, else very tight, clear, sharp, no additional marks. Cover ("Sherwood" green cloth boards with gold gilt frame and particulars, with color illustration front) = very good, with rubbing to all, which has removed small chips from illustration and has caused particulars on spine to fade; few water specks on back; 4 scratches to top edge of back; front unsuccessfully attempting to separate from binding; else rest tight, all square, all present and easy to read, no chips or tears. EXCLUSIVE TO THIS COPY: Inscription on first ffe reads "Michael van Beuren from Jessica." While not authenticated, this may be a gift to the unschooled bauhaus furniture designer Michael van Beuren from his sister Jessica van Beuren.

Synopsis

Based on the Paul Creswick telling of Robin Hood, and drawing from the rich and varied lore surrounding the beloved outlaw, this spirited reworking of Robin Hood's many adventures is a vibrant introduction to Friar Tuck, Little John, Maid Marian, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and, of course, Robin Hood, the hero whose generosity and sense of justice continue to intrigue readers today as much as they did eight hundred years ago. Original oil paintings by N. C. Wyeth capture the vitality of this classic tale.
