Lisette Keeble, 1982. Typed manuscript containing the biography of 20thC British artist Hilda Jillard (1899-1972), written by her long-time friend and sometime neighbour Lisette Keeble, an interior decorator and designer. Jillard was associated with artist colonies at Newlyn and St Ives, Cornwall, and lived in both Cornwall and Surrey. Her work is now held at the Newlyn Art Gallery and the Imperial War Museum as well as in private collections.

Jillard sketched from an early age, but received formal art training at the Farnham School of Art in Surrey, and subsequently at the Slade School of Fine Art, under the tutelage of Professor Henry Tonks between 1920 and 1921. Jillard continued her studies in London at the Calderon School of Animal Painting, before moving to Paris for further study. By 1936 she had returned to the UK and joined the Guildford School of Art in Surrey, and established her first studio.

Her noted painting "What Harvest" (1939) was finished for her first London show at the Wertheim Gallery, a short-lived but pioneering, boundary-pushing contemporary art gallery in London established in 1930 by the formidable collector and modern art advocate Lucy Carrington Wertheim.

By the late 1940s, now living in Cornwall, Hilda Jillard became a member the Penwith Society of Arts, a new modern art society established by renowned British sculptor Barbara Hepworth and her husband, the painter Ben Nicholson, among others. She had another one-woman show in 1948 at the New Gallery in St Ives. Other significant exhibition of Jillard's work were held in 1965 at the Gordon Gallery in Wimbledon and 1969 at the Haslemere Gallery in Surry, both in conjunction with the sculptor Iris Sonnis.

Jillard was a distant relation of pioneering Victorian social commentator, theorist and traveller Harriet Martineau.

This affectionate portrait of Jillard brings into focus her struggles to create art in the midst of chronic and frequently debilitating illness, having been diagnosed (secretly) with multiple sclerosis.

59 pages, Inscribed by Lisette Keeble, with a signed letter from Keeble laid in. Includes mounted photo of Jillard, and mounted reproductions of four of her works: "What Harvest?" (1939), "Anthony" (1941), "Zennor Symphony" and "Gossip".

Description:
Philadelphia editions of all four volumes of Yearsley's Gothic novel inspired by The Man in the Iron Mask. Known as "Lactialla" or the poetical milkwoman, Yearsley was a poet with a basic education, born in Clifton. She came to the charitable notice of Hannah More of Bristol, who edited her poetry and managed her monies, a dependency that led to a falling out and accusations of classism against More. While mainly noted for her poetry, Gothic thriller The Royal Captives addresses the mistreatment of women, the poor and the lower classes, themes that resonated for Yearsley. These two volumes were owned by Sally Dimon of Fairfield. Yearsley was also an abolitionist.Royal Captives 1: Philadelphia: Two volumes bound in one. Printed for Robert Campbell, 1795. Description:
Seventeen-year-old Florence Nightingale Soden began this diary to mark her society debut and to document the expanded social and travel engagements available to her. The first entry on Sept 3, 1883 marks her seventeenth birthday and details Soden's extensive journey around Italy and France, far away from her home in Clapham, England.
Soden clearly reflects upon some of her entries after they are written and edits herself. She cut out three pages, another four have been completely removed from the diary, and one page is painted over black. Botanical specimens are tipped in as momentos. Her student days are remembered with a Class I exam paper on the history of Rome laid in at the back. (It may be that a Class I mark was the parental prerequisite for the reward of her travel abroad.)
Born in 1866 and named after the illustrious nurse, Florence visited her namesake city several times in her journeys. Soden documents everyday vexations and unusual events including singing lessons from Dr Emil Behnke and… Read More

Convent-raised Marguerite de Launay lived a comfortable life until her benefactress died and poverty compelled her to become a lady-in-waiting. Her clever literary gifts emerged at court, where she assisted the Duchess due Maine with her Mémoire des princes légitimes. She was involved in scandals and romances and eventually married to a more secure station. Her memoirs are compelling and humorous reading, and are very much of the time.
Handsome limited edition of the amusing and clear-sighted memoirs. Here with a preface by Mme La Baronne Double and 41 etchings par A.D. Lalauze. In French.
Paris: Edition Jouaust, Librarie des Bibliophiles, 1890. 204, 212 pages. Each volume 19 x 12 x 3cm. Three quarter leather binding with four bands to spine. Very pretty, though most pages cockled and stiff, and so overall condition good only.
