Black and white photographic and colour illustrated plates throughout. Pull-out map to final page. Book has been rebound by library, with expected inserts, stamps and inscriptions. Binding remains firm. Pages and plates have light tanning and foxing throughout. Tear to map. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends.

Top edges gilt. Bookplate in each volume of Arthur John Tedder (Commissioner of the Board of Curtoms who devised the old age pension scheme and father of Arthur William Tedder, a senior RAF Commander during the Second World War). Pp.xxiii,436 + 4pp publisher's adverts; xvii,441 + 2pp publisher's adverts. 388 illustrations. 10 maps. On this expedition, between 1906 and 1908, Hedin explored the western highlands of Tibet and the Transhimalaya, visited the 9th Panchen Llama, was the first European to reach the Kailash region and successfully searched for the sources of the Indus and Brahmaputra rivers.
