About This Item

University of California Press, Berkeley, California, 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. This sweeping survey of the artistic achievements of Himalayan culture is the first major exhibition to include objects from all the major religions of the region. Created to accompany the landmark art exhibition that includes almost two hundred of the finest works of art created between the sixth and nineteenth centuries in India, Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, this book explores the particular beauty that evolved from the spiritual traditions unique to the Himalayas. Lavishly illustrated with many rarely seen images, Himalayas conveys the spiritual aspirations of those who defied the physical hardships of an arduous mountain terrain to express their soaring creative spirit. The only damage to the book is the previous owner's chop at the bottom right of the front end page and half title page stop magnificently illustrated in the main with colour photography, and with text compliment. Essays and catalogue entries investigate the cultural milieu in which the works of art – objects of devotion and ritual implements – were created. An appendix provides translations and interpretations of important Nepali, Kashmiri and Tibetan inscriptions. – Front fold over blurb Full number line. Size: Folio ( 12"- 15" tall ). 312 pages.
