About This Item

1789 1st ed Japanese Woodblock Illustrated Nanga China Art Painting Fei Han-Yuan

A rare, 17th-century handwritten Japanese woodblock book exploring the landscape techniques of Hi Kangen (Fei Han-yuan), a Chinese merchant and artist who lived in japan during the mid-18th century and became a popular teacher of nanga painting (a school of Japanese painting which flourished in the late Edo period among artists who considered themselves literati, or intellectuals. While each of these artists was, almost by definition, unique and independent, they all shared an admiration for traditional Chinese culture).

This 1789 first edition is mainly about the paintings of various trees and various leaves with the painting method is based on the traditional Chinese painting method. It is written for beginners, and each step is composed in detail, one by one, for easier learning. This first edition in the first two volumes includes illustrations primarily of trees leaves, rocks, mountains, and the third volume being buildings, palaces, bridges, ships, and common people.
