About This Item

Paris: Chez Claude Barbin, 1697. Hardcover. Internally Good +. Scarce work on Christian heresy by the French poet Carel de Sainte Garde, which examines heretical movements from the Scribes and Pharisees to the Quietists of France in the 1670s and 1680s. "Presbyteriens" and Quakers are also included here, with descriptions of the persecution of several Quakers, including founder George Fox, Syndercomb, and "Margeuritte Fett (sic)" (Fox's wife).

With an interesting period manuscript annotation at the rear end paper pertaining to 2 specific beliefs of Tatian (Tatien), an Assyrian Christian theologian of the 2nd century. These are: Tatien's condemnation of marriage as nothing more than an invention of the devil; and his rejection of drinking wine, as an evil which resulted in Lot's committing incest with his two daughters (see p62).

4to, iv, [14], 496 pp. Each chapter with ornate engraved headpieces. In the original full leather binding, with ornate gilt decoration, and oval gilt device with 3 fleur de lys at front board. Full French mottled calf, bold dentelles. Severely damaged at edges. Internally bright and clean, damp mark visible in gutter in last 70 pages. Front end papers lacking; the text remarkably bright and clean. As is.

OCLC: 457276735 records 4 copies, the National Library of France, Besancon, Beziers, and Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve.
