Beautifully illustrated set of the "Histoire de la Revolution de 1848" (History of the Revolution of 1848) by A. de Lamartine. 1849 1st edition; Perrotin, Libraire-Editeur; Paris. Complete in two volumes. Both volumes feature wonderful engraved plates. Three-quarter leather bound with marbled covers and end papers; raised bands and bright gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Written entirely in French.

Also known as the Spring of Nations, People's Spring, and Springtime of the Peoples, the Revolutions of 1848 were a series of political upheavals throughout Europe in 1848. It remains the most widespread revolutionary wave in European history. The revolutions were essentially bourgeois revolutions and democratic and liberal in nature, with the aim of removing the old monarchical structures and creating independent nation-states. Some of the major contributing factors were widespread dissatisfaction with political leadership, demands for more participation in government and democracy, demands for freedom of the press, demands made by the working class, the upsurge of nationalism, and the regrouping of established government forces.

Condition:
Some very light rubbing to the covers; the edges of the spines have a few small areas where the leather has peeled; corner wear; bright gilt on the spines. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. Foxing throughout both volumes. Both volumes have writing in pencil a blank front end paper and the half title page, each have a strip of paper affixed to the rear end paper (the strip has torn from volume 2, but a small piece remains).
