Description:
Paris, Chez la vevfe Edm Pepingué ... M.DC. LIX [1659]. First Edition. Hard Cover. Two volumes: [20], 662; [22], 623 p.; 15 cm. The French Royal Historiographer wrote a number of works, beginning with "Abrégé". This history of Spain traces the origins of the country in Volume 1. In Volume 2 Ferdinand marries Isabella, the Jews are expelled from the country, Columbus discovers America (p. 97), Pizarro discovers Peru (p.171) and France and Spain battle in Italy, the Low Countries, wherever they could. The second half, the last 300 pages or so, deal with conflicts of the years between 1648 and 1658, This is a rare book-- I did not find it in OCLC World Catalog, the BN; one copy in COPAC; not in Brunet (but Cioranescu 17th Century, 28251); viaLibri recorded only a 1682 edition. Bound in contemporary full leather, rebacked; very good. Stock#OB780.

1666 Lives of Popes 200 PORTRAITS Platina Catholic Sacchi Italian Panvinio

Bartolomeo Sacchi, or Platina, was a 15th-century Italian humanist who is most remembered for his book 'Vitae Pontificum,' or 'Lives of the Popes.' 'Lives' was an important work dedicated to the papacy of important Catholic popes, but Platina wrote the work through the lens of Roman history with obvious themes of paganism. This book was the first systematic handbook on papal history and praises the punishment of heresy throughout the Catholic Church.

This 1666 Italian edition includes an ecclesiastical chronology by Onofrio Panvinio and includes over 200 engravings!

Description:
1662 Stillingfleet Irenicum Anglican Church Government vs Presbyterian ENGLISH

Edward Stillingfleet was a 17th-century British theologian known for his defensive views on Anglicanism. His first work, which (negatively) set the tone for his literary career, was 'The Irenicum', a work which advocated for compromise between the Presbyterian and Anglican Orthodox churches. While the root of the work is founded in theological church models and structures, Stillingfleet covers a variety of philosophical ideas including the state of natural law.

According to Morison and Richardson,
"'The Irenicum' was set forth the assuage the spirit of sectarian bitterness; it was an attempt to show that there was no plan of Church Order laid down in the New Testament; and it bears just as strongly against notions of divine institution of Presbyterianism."

'Irenicum' was published before the church was re-established and contributed to debates about ecclesiastical restoration by showing the legitimacy of obeying… Read More

1624 Summa Conciliorum Spanish Inquisition Carranza Dominican Catholic Papacy

Bartolomé Carranza was a 16th-century Dominican archbishop who was persecuted by the Spanish Inquisition for charges of heresy, even though no evidence ever supported these charges. He composed numerous theological essays including 'Summa Conciliorum et Pontificum' – a collection of dissertations in which he argues the authority of the church to govern, traditions within the Catholic Church, the viability of scripture, role of the Pope, and importance of ecumenical councils.

A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231.
