London: Henry Colburn, 1817. Half Leather. Fair binding. Quarto. xx, 368 pp, color plates. First edition. Backed in crushed morocco with corners and marbled paper over boards. Boards detached, spine is detached but present. Containing 27 of 28 plates and with both maps; lacking one plate ("The ruins of the village of Ligny"), else complete. This copy contains the frontispiece, "Portraits of General Officers" rather than the portrait of Shaw (no known priority according to Abbey). The two folding maps as well as the folding plate, "The Battle of Waterloo" have early repairs to the verso with some offsetting from the materials used; "Map from Brussels to Paris" is detached and laid in. Previous owner embossed sticker on the half title. The binding shows evidence of amateur tape repair to the rear hinge. While this is not an ideal copy, the textblock and most all the plates except for the folding plate and maps are in very nice condition with only very light and occasional toning to the margins. A remarkable book with striking, hand-colored plates, four of which are entirely by Cruikshank, including the fold-out Battle of Waterloo, the engraved title, and frontispiece. Cruikshank drew the figures in all of the other plates. Abbey Life 372; Tooley 336. Inquire if you'd like a quote for repairing the binding.
