London: E. Curll, 1720. This antique hardcover book is bound in three-quarter leather with marbled boards. Leather is mostly clean and smooth, with a few light scratches on the front, rubbing on the rear. Gilt trim, spine decorations and spine lettering are bright. Endpapers are marbled. Inner pages are browned. Front and rear hinges show a previous repair - binders tape is present, still slightly weak. This book was likely rebound in the 1800s. Jacob, known more for his legal writing than his literary criticism, also made an enemy of Alexander Pope and was written into Pope's "Dunciad" as one of the dunces. This volume gives biographies of several English poets, illustrated with pasted-in engravings. 328 pages, plus index; approx. 5"x7".. First Edition. Hard Cover. Collectible-Good/No Jacket.

1661 Ancient ROME Emperors Historiae Augustae Commodus Maximus Hadrian Vellum

"Historiae Augustae" is a rare, 17th-century collection of ancient Roman histories of Roman Emperors by many of the 'minor' classical historians. Many of these histories were written during the reigns of Constantine the Great but cover the reigns of rulers such as Hadrian, Caracalla, Geta, Antonius, Albinus, Maximus and Balbinus, Cassius, Commodus, Heliogabalus, Severus Alexander, and many others. While the biographies are the appeal of this work, the authors themselves shouldn't be overlooked.

The 30+ biographies were written by Aelius Spartianus, Julius Capitolinus, Vulcacius Gallicanus, Aelius Lampridius, Trebellius Pollio, and Flavius Vopiscus Syracusanus. Thomas Mainwaring's "Legitimacy of Amicia" is a rare, 17th-century treatise on marriage law. Mainwaring and Leicester continuously fought over the matter which indirectly produced this book on family law and genealogy. This 1679 printing is the only known edition of this work. Quite rare.

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
