London : Printed by R D forJohn Williams, 1652 A fair copy of Thomas Fuller's Historie of the Holy Warre, bound with his Holy State and Profane State. Classed as 'fair' because the binding has wear and the Holy Warre has a very old replacement title page and lacks the 'declaration of the frontispiece'. With folding map, decorative frontispiece/title page, and 20 engraved portraits and decorative initial capitals. The full leather binding has contemporary calf boards which have reinforced and repaired corners to the front board, and worn corners and edges to the back board. A new spine was added, probably in the 1800's and this is worn with some splitting to spine joints - particularly at the front. Internally there is a bookplate of Chelsea Public Libraries to the front pastedown with a note that this book was donated by Mrs Rutson. Contents: folding map (some repair); decorative frontispiece/title page (with browning, some dog-earing, and trimming); hand-drawn replica title page - including a very good drawing of the crown - which assumes that the edition is the 3rd edition - when it is probably 4th; text in 5 books - 286pp (browning to some sections, p207 with wrinkled edges; some spotting in Bk V); Preface to the Chronologie 1p; Table 20pp; Catalogue of authors 2pp; table index 6pp; Finis. Blank leaf. Decorative title page - The Holy State 1648; further title page - 3rd edition 1652; To the Reader 2pp; Index 2pp; text in 4 books with 17 engraved portraits (some damage to side margins with no text loss pp 17-33, Chelsea stamp to bottom margin p100, p122 some spot damage has affected small areas of text); title page 'The Profane State' 1652; text pp 343-510 with 3 engraved portraits (Chelsea stamp in margin p510); Finis (some staining to the bottom page edges of Profane State can be seen in bottom margin from time to time). Overall contents clean and most pages in good nearing very good condition.

1640 History of Holy War CRUSADES Jerusalem ISLAM Ottoman Turks Thomas Fuller

Thomas Fuller was a 17th-century English historian who particularly notable for his historical accounts of English worthies and the Church of England. In 1639, Fuller wrote 'History of the Holy War' – a popular book on the Crusades, taken from several notable and accurate accounts. It is curious though, Fuller wrote this work with an incredible amount of wit and humor, so much so that he included stories unrelated to the Crusades just to fill pages! According to Tyerman,
"Thomas Fuller's 'History of the Holy Warre is one of the more interesting histories of the crusades written by an Englishman."
While several works concerning the Crusades were written and published over the 17th- and 18th-centuries, Thomas Fuller's was the first Anglican view of the Crusades and the first in English following the Reformation. Modern Crusades scholars such as Christopher Howse describe Fuller's account as a mocking of the Crusades and the… Read More

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
