About This Item

Graies Inn And Furnivalls Inn Gates In Holborne & at the hand and Bible in Duck lane: R Best, Jo Place & Sam Cartwright, 1652 A good copy of an early edition of Ralegh's history, first published circa 1616. Ralegh (circa 1552-1618) wrote the work while imprisoned in the Tower of London - intending it to contain Five Books to bring it up to modern time. He only completed Book I. In early full leather binding with blind stamp to the centre of both boards dated 1688. Complete with 6 double page maps and 2 folding battle plans. With decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. Contents: decorative title page placed as a frontispiece; second title page with portrait of Ralegh; Preface - 32pp; Chapter Index 25pp; Book 1 pp1-184; Book 2 pp 181-555. Page numbering restarts with Book 3 pp 1-129; Book 4 pp130-260; Book 5 pp 261-669; Note to the Reader 2pp; Chronological Tables 24pp; Index 24pp. The binding has been repaired at some point - possibly in the 1800's - replacing the spine and adding a newer title label, while retaining the boards. This repair is showing wear at the joints and at the top and bottom of the spine. The boards show wear to corners particularly and to the top edge. Internally the preliminary and end leaves were replaced at the repair; the 2 title pages have been repaired (there was some loss to the second title page); early leaves have some paper repairs (well done); there is some neat scholarly annotation at some points; there are 2 areas of worm damage - one from page 260 in the top margin close to the gutter (this continues for a number of pages - it affects the chapter headings at some points but does prevent the text being read) and one in the outer side margin of pages 371-471 which does not affect text; there is repair to some maps but this has been well done; and some of the page numbering is wrong eg p 512 followed by p 517 but there is no break in the text. Generally the text is clean and in good order. There is occasional marking. Please ask if you would like to see additional images.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
