Nuremberg: Peter Conrad Monath, 1730., 1730. folio. pp. 14 p.l., 314, [18]. engraved title vignette & 15 engraved plates (5 folding). title in red & black. paneled calf antique. First Edition of this important biobibliography of the scientists, mathematicians, architects, artists, instrument makers (including musical instruments), inventors, map makers, &c., of Nuremberg. Over three hundred and sixty scientists and artists are noted, including Johann Sch�ner, Daniel Schwenter, Johann Homann, Virgil Solis, Albrecht D�rer, Anton Koberger, Michael Wolgemuth, Joachim von Sandrart, Sebald Behaim, &c. Their biographies are arranged chronologically from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The beautiful engravings illustrate Behaim's globe (as a world map in 2 hemispheres), J.Hautsch's festival carriage, Hans Hayden's clavier, fountains, statues, art work by Adam Krafft, Veit Stoss, Peter Fischer and others, technical inventions such as artificial eyes, &c. Doppelmayr, professor of mathematics at Nuremberg and fellow of the Royal Society of London and the academies of Berlin and St. Petersburg, was famous not only for his scientific publications but also for his skill in polishing mirrors and grinding lenses for telescopes, and later, for his electrical experiments.
