Full contemporary calf, marroon spine labels, gilt lettering. Wear to edges, spines darkened and some chipping to labels, front board of Volume I detached but present, other joints worn but all holding, contents are toned and occasionally foxed mainly to endpapers, text blocks are all sound, but text appears to be unread., owner's name written neatly at top of all 3 title pages. Two of the maps have archivally mended tears, and all maps and plate are in, otherwise, a very well-preserved state.. Fifth Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Binding is shaken and split in 2, contents are tanned, foxed and partially dampstained, text is complete. It is said that the name "Uncle Sam" originated as result of Anderson's claim. Anderson sold meat to the US Army, which came from a meatpacker named Samuel Wilson. The meat was stamped EAUS (Elbert Anderson United States). The soldiers joked that the initials stood for Elbert Anderson and Uncle Sam. A very scarce book.
