As the Civil War progressed, the Confederate government saw the liability in Northern POWs and decided to move them south to a remote spot in Georgia where poor organization, lack of food and supplies, large numbers of prisoners (32,000), and cruelty of the overseers led to large numbers of deaths among the POWs and made Andersonville Prison Camp the worse containment facility of the Civil War on either side of the battle.
