In contemporary black silk moire covered boards. x, [ix, printed list of subscribers], 74, 75-78, pub's ads, blank. 12 b&w plates, inc two engraved frontispieces, a plan of the cathedral, elevations and illustrations, some missing their tissue guards but all present, one of them loose, some light foxing to a few of the plates, more so to prelims. Bumped to tips, some marks to boards, wear to head and tail of spine, the second engraved frontis. slightly loose. Still a decent, sound copy with a firm binding bar some looseness around prelims after the flyleaf. Previous owner's small bookplate to front pastedown. Britton, perhaps less heralded now, nonetheless was a shining star of C19th topography, essentially creating the genre of popular topography.

Hill was one of the most notable Victorian prison reformers and politically involved throughout his career, including working towards the Reform Bill of 1832.
