Meticulously researched examination of Black public schools undertaken by several Black active and retired teachers in the "Merry Makers Club of Rockville," a public service voluntary social club, after a new member mentioned having heard a speaker state that Maryland did not have a Black high school until the 1940's. This well-documented book sets the record straight. Illustrated with black-and-white photos of authors, research assistants, teachers, students, and former school houses. Includes a 27-page section of "Personal Reflections" by students and teachers at what were then known as "Negro Schools." Documents the 1936 Gibbs v Broome case for equal pay for Black teachers in Montgomery County argued by then NAACP lawyer Thurgood Marshall. Name on front endpaper. Near fine in about very good dust jacket with significant rubbed creasing to edges and folds but only minor chips at tips. Together with 1995 first paperback edition signed by Clarke & Brown; and the May 1979 issue of "The Montgomery County Story" featuring an article by Donald M. Leavitt, "Early Montgomery County Schoolhouses," which would appear to examine only schoolhouses used for White children.
