Just a hint of darkening to the spines of both bindings but overall this is a near fine, lovely set of these classic books.

Finely bound in a contemporary full dark green morocco binding by Ramage of London. Spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt. The compartments with gilt ruled lines, flower and star designs and lettering. Decorative flower and leaf designs to both boards, within a wavy line border which is surrounded by multiple stars, within a ruled line border, all in gilt. Elaborate gilt tooled stars, flowers and decorative roll borders to the inner boards with off-white moire silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat inscription, dated 1914, to the front blank free endpaper. Spine faded to an attractive tan colour and the front board to a lighter green but still a beautiful fine binding from the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey, and with his burgundy morocco leather and gilt book plate to the front… Read More

Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

Previous owner name neatly written on blank free endpapers and a name clipped from the top of the title pages, otherwise very good, bright and clean copies throughout. Early full tan calf bindings with raised bands to the spines. Compartments double gilt ruled. Red title labels, gilt. Some minor wear to the extremities but overall very good and attractive bindings. ---- Complete as published, these first two volumes of Stern's Sermons of Mr. Yorrick, published anonymously in 1760, were added to at a later date with another five volumes issued between 1766 and 1769.

This is a very representative copy of the 'Centenary Edition' of the poetry of Robert Burns. Bound by the famous Bayntun (Riviére) bindery in Bath in decorative half leather and cloth covered boards. The spines have five raised bands, gilt lettering on morocco labels and gilt tooling to compartments. Top edges gilt. Bindings remain generally clean, some ligth surface streaks to leather on some boards. Joints rubbed,some cracking mainly to upper joints resulting in a little movement to boards, others remain firm.
