This is a very good copy of Sketch of the Civil and Traditional History of Caithness from the Tenth Century, by James Traill Calder (1794-1864), a teacher in the Caithness town of Wick, who was also a local historian. It is required reading for anyone interested in Scottish history.
Caithness is the county on the north-easternmost tip of Scotland. It is known for its very long history of human occupation, for its many significant battles, for its harsh climate, and for its abundant wildlife and natural beauty—it also has the largest expanse of bog in Europe.
This book was first published in 1861. It was a best-seller and sold out. It was re-issued in 1887 as a second edition. That second edition was re-issued in 1973; this is a copy of the 1973 printing. At bottom, I have pasted in Calder's own chapter-by-chapter synopsis.
This copy is green boards with brilliant gold lettering on the cover and spine. It has almost no shelfwear and just a couple of light marks on the covers. Inside, you can see that it has come in contact with moisture, but there is no smell of mildew, and there is no damage to any of the pages. It is 368 pages with several photographs, maps, and lineage charts. Excellent book.
