Wm Alexander, York, 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Two matching volumes, each including the two parts of each volume, bound in brown half leather with marbled covers, matching marbled end-papers and marbled block edges and banded spines. Contain many woodcut vignettes, copper plates and a coloured fold-out Plan of the City of York. Boards are clean and firm and lightly rubbed at corners and on edges, wear at spine ends, volume II has split in leather over rear upper joint with adjacent leather lifting off spine, clean end-papers with bookplate ( D Joyce Galbraith) pasted to front inside covers of both volumes. Gift note, dated 1910, on second front end-paper of vol. I. Sound binding. Pages are clean and bright, plates are heavily foxed (including printed areas). Black and white plates are all present and are: The Cathedral; The Ruins of St Mary's Abbey; Ouse Bridge with St. William's Chapel; View of City; Micklegate-Bar; Projected New Bridge; Clifford's Tower (bound at Vol II page 402 not at 248 as listed). 2-volume set (complete). Black spine-labels and gilt decoration on the spine. Contain many woodcut vignettes, copper plates and a coloured fold-out Plan of the City of York. All three volumes have been neatly re-backed retaining contemporary covers and overlaid spines. Covers are clean and firm and lightly rubbed at corners and on edges, light wear at spine ends.
