Illustrated by upwards of two thousand figures. 71 plates plus frontispiece, of which 35 are coloured. Volume I: Previous owners name (Stephen Batty) in ink on FEP, rubbing to corners. Volume II: Spine break at FEP, previous owner's name (Stephen Batty) in ink on FEP, Chipping to top of spine, tear at spine cover (top 1 1/2 inches) Bound by Geo. Coward of Carlilsle in half leather brown boards with banded spines. A marvellous collection of fascinating anecdotes sequentially arranged by Goldsmith, presented in this 1855 edition in two volumes. Original plan had been to rearrange the matierial according to contemporary [pre-Darwin] Classification systems, but the work eventually appeared as originally published by Goldsmith in the year of his death, 1774. This is a landmark document of its era and belongs on the shelf on any serious naturalist or geologist, if not only for the beautiful illustrations. Photos available, secure delivery worlwide..
