London - Longman, Green, & Co., 1889 Book. Good. Hardcover. Seven volumes of Macaulay's famous History of England, uniformly bound. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British poet, historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer, and on British history. Macaulay's approach to writing theHistorywas innovative for his period. He consciously fused the picturesque, dramatic style of classical historians such as Thucydides and Tacitus with the learned and factual approach of his 18th century precursors such as Hume, following the plan laid out in his own earlierEssay on History(1828). TheHistoryis famous for its brilliant ringing prose and for its confident, sometimes dogmatic, emphasis on a progressive model of British history. According to this view, England threw off superstition, autocracy and confusion to create a balanced constitution and a forward-looking culture combined with freedom of belief and expression. This model of human progress has been called the Whig interpretation of history. Here with seven volume of the eight called for. The seventh volume ends with William III in 1697. Includes a frontispiece of the author's portrait in volume one. Collated: the volumes present are complete. Condition: In half calf, with gilt edges. Externally with rubbing to the extremitiesof the boards and more generally to the spines, which are also faded. The spines also show general light shelfwear. There are marks to the spines of volume one, six, and seven. Internally, each volume has an ink inscription to the front blank. Otherwise generally clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: GOOD.
