61- London- Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1849 Book. Hardcover. First edition.. A five volume set of Macaulay's History of England. The second edition of volumes I-II. First edition of volumes III-V. Collated: Complete. There is no portrait frontispiece in the second edition. Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British historian and politician whose works on British history have been hailed as masterpieces. Macaulay's History of England was innovative for his period, framing the true history in a picturesque dramatic style of the classical historians, but with the learned and factual approach of his 18th century forebears. Macaulay's History of England was originally published in five volumes between 1848 and 1861. The first volumes were reissued in that time, and the final volume was published posthumously, compiled from Macaulay's notes by his sister Lady Trevelyan. Condition: Uniformly bound in half calf bindings with marbled boards by Hale and Roworth. Externally, generally smart with some moderate rubbing and wear to the head and tail of the spines, heavier to the head of the spine of volume II. Loss to the spine labels of volume II and total loss of one spine label to volume I. LIfting to spine label of volume III. Front hinge slightly strained to volume IV after half title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean aside from some light spotting to first and last pages including title pages. Ink signatures to title pages of all volumes. Top right corner of the half title to volume one has been clipped, removing the majority of an ink signature. Slight loss to head to title page to volume II not affecting text. Overall: GOOD..
