Volume 1. (ISBN 0948864206) The age of Evolution, 1523-1715; xviii, 237 p. with plans, paintings, prints and tables. This first volume describes the creation of the English gunfounding industry under Henry VIII and Elizabeth, with the gradual shift from foreign-inspired guns to a domestic. The period continues with the Stuarts, and the arming of the ships during the Dutch Wars of the 17th century. It covers in detail the great ordnance survey begun 1695 continuing for eight years, which listed, measured and noted the individual weights of some 14,000 guns ( 6,000 were on board ships at the time). It concludes chronologically with the 1703 establishment for guns and the state of the Navy in 1714. First ed. 1994 vg/vg.
Volume 2: (ISBN 0948864222) The Age of the System 1715-1815, xii, 500 p. Second volume continues with the development of the long gun throughout the 18th century, starting with the Borgard designs of 1716 and 1719, it goes on to cover all the variants of the Armstrong designs up to the Armstrong-Frederick design of 1760, and concludes with the 1887 Blomfield guns. It also covers the"light"guns which made their appearance at the end of the century; the Sadler gun, the Gover gun, and the Congreve carronade gun. The first truly comprehensive study of the armament of the Royal Navy. First ed.1997 vg/vg slight bump top boards, repaired ½" tear dj. Heavy - requires more postage.

Antoine Varillas was a French historiographer who is remembered for his numerous historical accounts of French royals such as King Louis XI, Louis XII, Henri II, and even Saint Louis.Unfortunately, his writings received little recognition. As a result, his scholarly reputation was negatively impacted. Initially having high hopes, his works failed to reach the status he had desired during his lifetime. It was not until much later that the public would show interest in his writings.
In 1685, Varillas' book on the lives and reigns of Saint Louis, Louis XI, and Henri II was published in La Haye.
