FIRST EDITION 1662. ASSOCIATION COPY. SIGNED AND DATED, REGINALD BLOMFIELD, POINT HILL, RYE, SUSSEX, EJUS LIBER, 1913. Folio in fours, approximately 340 x 225 mm, 13½ x 9 inches, 11 engraved maps, 1 folding, the rest double page, pages: [8], 424, [2], printed in double column, some mispagination in numbering, all catch words correct, printed marginal notes and a few printed pointing hands, title page printed in red and black, Dedicated to the Kings Most Excellent Majesty [i.e. Charles II], head- and tailpieces; bound in full later vellum, 2 contrasting decorated early gilt leather labels to spine, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Vellum a little dusty and marked, top cover slightly bowed, labels slightly chipped, title page professionally laid down on old matching paper, title page lightly stained and dusty, free blank endpaper with signatures has outer edge neatly strengthened on blank side with document tape, first folding plate has large neat repair to blank side, no loss of image, 6 other plates have small neat marginal repairs to blank side, 1 has very slight loss to outer margin, neatly repaired, not affecting main image, a few other small repairs or small closed tears, not affecting images or text, 3 plates slightly cropped with loss to margins, no loss to images, plates remounted on new stubbs at sometime, probably when the book was bound, some pale age-browning to plates and text, few small old ink splashes, tiny hole to 1 page, affecting a couple of letters, no loss of meaning, occasional pencil notes to margins, large neat old ink name above Blomfield's signature "Edwd. Jas. Smythe, Brandon, Suffolk". Overall a very good copy of the scarce first edition (allegedly many of the copies were destroyed in the great fire of London), signed by Sir Reginald Blomfield famous architect, author etc. Blomfield was made an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1881 and a Fellow in 1906; an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1905 and elected to the Academy in 1914, where he had been Professor of Architecture 1907-11 and awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1913. He was President of the RIBA in 1912-14 and was knighted in 1919. See Wikipedia for more details on his life and work.
