Recent half morocco leather binding with marbled boards, spine has five raised bands and black morocco label. Very solid binding, name in old ink to title page, foxing to final two leaves, a few light marks to text but otherwise in very clean condition throughout. Initial license-to-print leaf. Finely engraved additional title page. Title page printed in red and black. Five further engraved portraits: Thomas Wolsey (unsigned); Anne Boleyn (unsigned); Thomas Cromwell (R. White after H Holbein); Thomas More (R. White after H. Holbein); Thomas Cranmer (unsigned, after H. Holbein). Fully collated, lacking 2 plates (Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon) otherwise complete. ESTC R36341 (Wing B5797), this copy is a variant with advertisement for next volume at foot of final page. The rare first edition of Burnet's landmark work. A second volume covering the reign of Elizabeth I was published in 1681, followed by a third volume of corrections and additional material in 1714. A very nice example in an attractive later binding. Bound in full blind stamped period vellum with 7 raised bands on the spine. Front hinge is professionally repaired / strengthened. Pages are generally clean and crisp with a periodic spot of foxing (or miniscule ash burn); an occasional leaf is lightly age-toned. Several pages towards the end of the volume are numbered and signed twice (i.e. 543 544). A front blank fly-leaf contains a 5 x 32 mm hole and an inscription in a small early hand on the verso. Caecilius Cyprianus or St. Cyprian (200-258 c.e.) was Bishop of Carthage and important early Church father. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
