The History of the Reign of Henry the Fifth, King of England, &c by Thomas Goodwin - 1704

LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. London: Printed for the Author by E Hodson, 1794 A good copy of the suppressed 1st edition with 8 aquatint plates. Robertson was briefly imprisoned for his remarks and the revised edition, issued later in 1794, lacks pp 233-35 which were considered particularly seditious. In contemporary half leather binding with gilt decorative compartments to spine and marbled boards. With armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family (? Charles, 8th Lord, 1780-1826) to the front pastedown. The binding appears to be the original publisher's boards with a more elaborate spine and is rubbed with some splitting observable at the top of the front joint and bumping to corners. The contents are untrimmed and pages vary in size from octavo to quarto with wide margins. London: John Crump, 1680 A fair copy of the 'Second Edition Corrected and much Enlarged. Whereunto is added His Character, and A compleat Catalogue of all the Honours conferr'd by him on several Persons.' First published in 1660, this is a largely sympathetic view of Cromwell and has been attributed to Henry Fletcher and William Roybould who are listed as the publishers for the 1st edition. This copy has been rebound, probably in the early 1800's, as there is a signature of William Hall, June 3rd 1826, on the first new initial blank. It lacks the frontispiece but is otherwise complete. The half leather binding has raised bands to the spine and gilt tooled decoration. There is a title label (part rubbed) and a stamped date to the base. The spine has some wear to joints and the base but is sound. The boards have scuffing and wear to corners and little scuffing to the marbled suface. The endpapers are marbled. Edinburgh: Printed for the Author: Sold by George Stewart, at the Book and Angel, 1716 A very good copy of a scarce detailed account of the Scottish Peerage in the early eighteenth century. George Crawfurd was a Scottish genealogist and historian and this was his second work. This copy is in a newer, probably 20th century binding, copying contemporary binding style. With raised bands and title label to spine and a decorative border to the boards. It is in near fine condition with very slight wear to the top of the spine. Contents: new endpapers and new initial blank; title page in red and black; Preface pp iii-vii; list of subscribers pp i-iv; text pp 1-502; index pp i-iii; final blank. London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings. Cantabrigiae [Cambridge] : John White, 1622 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition with map, in contemporary full leather binding. The binding has wear to spine joints, the top and bottom of the spine and edges, but is of good quality leather and would repair well. Page edges red. Internally there is an armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family to the front pastedown and a signature of James West, clearly an early owner, on the fep.James has made some notes about the elections to Parliament for the County of Leicester in 1775. The fep has a tear at the top.
