Rare set of 3 volumes of aromatic herbs from Kan'en Iwasaki's multi-volume botanical series Honzo Zufu: Hokusabu (Iconographia Plantarum), originally compiled from 1828 and later published in 92 volumes. This set of 3 volumes (volumes 6, 7, 8 in the series) includes 21 pages of text and indexes, and 100 color woodcuts of fragrant herbs or medicinal plants.Plants include angelica, peony, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, turmeric, jasmine, tulip, rosemary, and many more. The plants were used in Chinese traditional medicine or kanpo.Condition: Washi paper covers scuffed, but interior clean and bright, color plates vivid and vibrant.Kan'en Iwasaki or Tsunemasa Iwasaki (1786–1842) was a Japanese botanist, zoologist and entomologist. His botanical studies were influenced by Johann Weinmann.

Very good copy of this early classic of British arachnology Rare. Only 600 copies printed. Complete with 29 hand-coloured plates drawn from nature by Tuffen West, Alfred Hollick and Robert Templeton, lithographed by W. West. Several plates with no artist credited. Descriptions and illustrations of 304 species of spiders, many with separate illustrations of microscopic anatomical details of eyes, legs, jaws, or webs and plant hosts, etc. Volumes 1 (1861) and 2 (1864) bound together in one, with only one Ray Society plate and one title page (Vol. 1). John Blackwall (1790-1881), was an English zoologist and ornithologist who later dedicated his life to arachnology. A History of Spiders was his major work, but was unfortunately delayed in the hands of his publishers, the Ray Society, for 10 years before publication. "It is full of minute detail, giving an almost photographic picture of the object. Nearly all his work was done without any aid but that of a pocket lens." (George Thomas Bettany, DNB) Tuffen (or Tuffin) West, 1823-1891, was an English scientific illustrator who worked on a variety of subjects including anatomy, zoology, botany, ichthyology, geology and entomology, often with lithographic printers W. West. Alfred Hollick (fl. 1837-1902) was an English scientific illustrator who specialized in illustrating books on geology, palenotology, entomology, herpetology, and malacology. Robert Templeton (1802-1892), was an Irish zoologist, artist and entomologist. While serving as a surgeon in the Royal Artillery based in Mauritius, Malta and finally Ceylon (Sri Lanka), he collected insects and published articles in scientific journals. In quarter brown leather, spine with five raised bands and gilt title, mustard yellow cloth boards, t.e.g., marbled endpapers, Ray Society plate, title page with small hole in top and lower-right corner neatly cut out, 384 pages of text, 29 plates with explanatory text pages facing. Leather spine and corners scuffed and torn, but interior fresh with only scattered light foxing to tissue guards, lithographed plates bright with very delicate hand-colouring. One plate with 1cm loss to lower left-hand corner in the gutter.

(Urocharis longicauda, Salvad.)Handcoloured lithograph by William Matthew Hart from John Gould's The Birds of New Guinea, London, 1875-88. William Matthew Hart (1830-1908) was a bird illustrator and lithographer who worked for John Gould from 1851. He began by making the patterns for the lithographic plates for Gould's monograph on Hummingbirds, as well as working on The Birds of Great Britain with Henry Constantine Richter. By 1870 Hart had become Gould's chief artist and lithographer. After Gould's death in 1881, Hart was employed by Richard Bowdler-Sharpe of the British Museum to complete Gould's work on the Birds of New Guinea and to produce illustrations for Sharpe's great work Monograph on the Birds of Paradise.Large folio size lithograph (52cm x 34cm) mounted in a cream-coloured French matt (74cm x 54cm).

Brown leather spine, black leather labels with gilt decoration, boards with brown marble paper. Condition: Binding scuffed, front hinge weak, plates slightly browned and spotting with usual crease down the centre (where the magazine was folded before binding).
