1814 Arthur of Little Britain Berners Morte d'Arthur Malory FAMOUS English ed

'Arthur of Little Britain' is a charming, chivalry romance legend from the late 15th-century, noted for its companionship to the famous 'Morte d'Arthur' by Malory. Numerous translations of this tale appeared following its popularity including the 1555 Utterson edition. The French version became the basis for many editions including the English edition of John Bourchier, Lord Berners. According to Wagner,

"many of Berners' translations influenced the work of later Elizabethan writers and chroniclers."

Most notably, this English edition of 'Arthur' is known to have directly influenced Edmund Spencer and his 'Faerie Queene'.

Charles Boutell was a 19th-century English archaeologist known for his famous book on English heraldry and monumental brasses. Brasses, which are a form of engraving, were popular forms of memorials used by English and European cathedrals. In 1849, Boutell published an absolutely enormous tome filled with engravings of English brasses, depicting kings, archbishops, bishops, knights, nobles, and other prominent figures from 14th and 15th-century England.

Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was a 17th-century French engineer who, after serving as the Marshal of France, became known as the greatest engineer of his time. It was from his surveys and developments in fortifications that propelled him to engineering fame. In fact, his fortification philosophies were used for nearly a century after his life. v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
