About This Item

London : John Fielding, 1785 A good copy of the 1st edition in new quarter leather binding, with 24 plates, 1 full page map and 6 folding maps. This work, published in 4 volumes over 1785-86 gives a relatively factual account of the American Revolution, drawing on newspaper articles and parliamentary business. The bindings are in fine condition. They have calf spines with gilt-lined raised bands, and gilt titles. The boards are covered with marbled paper. New endpapers. All the title pages have a small contemporary ink signature at the top. The paper quality varies within volumes - with some sections with brown toning and there is some spotting/occasional marking. All the maps have contemporary colour outlining. Vol I: frontispiece, title page, introduction pp 3-21; blank; text 448pp with 5 further plates. The frontispiece has contemporary hand colouring and 3 of the portraits have some trace of colouring, presumably done at the same time (the paper is paler on these because they have been professionally washed to remove some caricaturing) . There is a small brown mark in the gutter of pp 1-3 and some scholarly pencil annotation in the first half of the volume. P 73 has lost the tip of the top corner; P 215 has lost the tip of the bottom corner and some page corner tips have been turned over. Vol II: title page, text with 4 plates and 2 folding maps, 449pp. The maps have a very small repaired edge tear each. Vol III: title page, text with 3 plates and folding map, 445pp. The map is missing the bottom corner - which includes a section of ocean but not land. Vol III: title page, text with 11 plates, 3 folding maps and 1 single page map, 416pp, index 59pp.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
