History of Westchester County, New York, Including Morrisania, Kings Bridge, and West Farms which have been annexed to New York City. (2 Volume Set)

by Scharf, J. Thomas

Condition: Very Good/Not Issued

Philadelphia: L.E. Preston & Co., 1886. 1886 original edition. Complete 2-volume set. VERY GOOD. Contains hundreds of illustrations, both in text and as plates: including line-cuts, portrait gravures (most tissue protected) and maps several of which are fold-outs. Books are clean and intact. Previous owner custom bookplates affixed to front pasted endpapers - no other markings. Occasional small spottings to pages: Vol. 1 title pages toned and some smudging to Vol. 2 title page otherwise pages and the numerous illustration plates are very good to near fine. There are several black & white fold-out maps printed on light weight paper. A tipped-in hand-colored double-width map of Westchester county is tipped in as the frontispiece to Vol. 1. It is in fine condition. Some maps are toned and creased, primarily along folds and edges. A large Revolutionary war map is toned, rumpled along edges and has a long closed tear near the binding gutter. Gilt top edges dulled. Overall, pages and plates are very good to near fine. Bound in a sturdy dark brown leatherette over beveled boards, gilt-titled on black spine labels. (The set may have been rebound; if so probably early twentieth century.) Covers clean, moderately shelf worn and edge rubbed; there are a few white marks to front cover of Vol. 2. Bindings firm, a bit of looseness in hinges but they remain intact. There is some pulling to binding where the Revolutionary war map is inserted. (These are heavy books and the binding has held up well to the strains.) 1886 editions of this momentous work are now uncommon; this is a particularly well-preserved example. SIZE: 7-1/2 x 11". Vol. 1: viii + 892 pages, plus plates and inserts. Vol 2: vii + 772 pages plus plates and inserts . A heavy set, the two volumes weighing over 15 lbs. not including packaging. Additional postage required for Priority or International mailing. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Not Issued.
