Small in size (height 2 to 4 feet); tendency to chubbiness; tough, leathery & hairy foot soles (little need for shoes) and near no facial hair; graceful, long skillful fingers; keen of hearing & eyesight with associated ability to move swiftly and silently. Philosophically, devoted to the simple daily pleasures (many enjoyr some 6 meals a day) and guided by truisms; adoration of laughter, jests and celebration. Pending class status, many, not all, dwell underground in "holes" (smials, or in Old English smygel). Clothing wise, a preference to bright colors. Content with their shire & homestead, Hobbits are not adventurous. These are traits Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry & Pippin, and other Hobbits bring along as they take on a central role in The Lord of the Rings. Saga beings with wizard Gandalf and dispossessed dwarrfs' call on Bilbo to regain the Lonely Mountain for the Dwarfs, and ultimatel confrontation the frightening Gollum. . First Edition, First Thus.
