Santa Rosa: Black Sparrow Press, 1989. First Trade Edition. One of 900 hardcover copies published (not 1,000 as stated in the colophon). Octavo (23.5cm); 3/4 white paper-covered boards reproducing a painting by John Register, with a white cloth backstrip and printed title label applied to spine; original acetate dustjacket; 239,[4]pp. Inscribed on the front endpaper, with a small original drawing beneath the inscription: For Mina and Red - I'm still here and I'm glad you are too. Yeah. Hank Charles Bukowski." Just short of being Fine, with a hint of toning to board edges and mild handling to lower third of backstrip, in a lightly rubbed acetate jacket. Bukowski's novel based on his experiences making the film 'Barfly,' filmed by Barbet Schroeder in 1987. This copy bears a warm, personal inscription to Mina and Sholom "Red" Stodolsky, who operated the Baroque Bookstore in Hollywood, CA from 1972 until his death in 1998. Red was a close friend of Bukowski's, and a great champion of his work, stocking his books in the Hollywood shop and hosting poetry readings and signings. As a sign of respect and affection, Bukowski immortalized his friend in the poem "Red" (1989) and in his novel "Pulp" (1994). A wonderful association. Krumhansl 112b.
