London: Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, 1701. Hardcover. Very Good. Published 1701, King James version, lectern folio (18.75 inches, 47.5 cm), in contemporary dark brown full calf with heavily gilt decorated spine with a pattern of gilt filigreed semi-circles and handsome stars between each hub, boards spangled with gilt stars, central gilt arabesque and unusual stippled gilt rules in patterns reminiscent of Samuel Mearne's cottage-style gilt binding designs of a decade or two before this. Very good, with light restoration to front joint, front inner hinge neatly strengthened with dyed cloth, front flyleaf somewhat worn at the edges, first blank filled out with 19th century geneaological notes on the Warrick family of Kent, first page of Genesis with long repaired tear, p. 424 with short reparable tear, foxing and toning to text. With engraved general title page and letterpress title page for the New Testament. Collates complete with (14) 1456 (20) pp, including a long essay The Translators to the Reader. 'In this edition the date of the Nativity is taken as the central event in history, and--apparently for the first time in any English Bible--the years are reckoned as either 'Before Christ' or 'Anno Domini' --Herbert 868.

Acceptable. 32mo.; 2,105 p., on thin but very strong paper, clean and unmarked although end pages have penciled notations in back and penciled name of former owner on front end page, where there are two odd closed tears, quite small, in the middle of pages; some pages dog-eared; AEG; gutters cracked and here is some splitting of leather along edges of spine but book square and no pages are detached; black leather boards are bumped and rubbed, esp. the ends of strip that fits into a leather loop on front board. Actually still beautiful, this volume deserves skillful repair.
