About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn and no clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price. These edns are generally believed to be export edns which are released before the trade editions' distribution in the country of origin.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy, black background with superimposed, colour infographic of US,British and Russian flag and subject's thumbnail b/w portrait photograph illustrated front panel of dw/dj,with capitalised red-lettered authors' names and capitalised,white-lettered part tile with red-lettered sub-title,white background to spine/backstrip with similarly coloured capitalised authors' names but a capitalised, black-lettered part title as opposed to the white lettering of the front and red lettered sub-title with thumbnail colour infographic detail of the same 3 flags, rear panel with black background and thumbnail b/wportrait photographs of some participants and red+white lettered bullet points. With negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present - some inevitable but minimal, superficial scoring/indents to either panel of dw/dj without penetration to upper board beneath, and one small spot of indents to rear board only.Top edges with light toning and faint dust-flecks; fore-edges with bright without foxing; contents bright - text body particularly -,tight,clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - possibly unread, other than my own collation.Publisher's bright,crisp,unblemished,sharp-cornered, original plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt lettered spine/backstrip and clean, plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB +dw/dj,1st edn,xiv-xvpp+2-264pp [paginated] includes acknowledgements,a Prologue,18 chapters+Epilogue,16pp contemporary b/w biographical photographs and b/w illustrations in 1 block, between pp144/45,Sources,a 6pp Bibliography, and an Index; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication,an epigram,a contents list/table with an illustrations acknowledgement to its reverse, and an illustrations list/table with a blank verso. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age. It is only the minimal exterior faults that prevents a slightly higher grading overall - for both book+dw/dj. Despite them, it really is an exceptional acceptable copy for its cleanliness and brightness. The book is a definitive investigation, expose of the Profumo Affair, and concentrates on the role of Stephen Ward, who groomed beautiful young women to pleasure his influential and aristocratic friends. Twenty-four years ago,the world learned that a member of the government,Minister for War,John Profumo, had had an affair with a nineteen-yeaar-old girl called Christine Keeler, who was seeing Soviet diplomat and spy,Eugene Ivanov,at the same time. The Minister resigned, and attention focused on the prostitution trial of Stephen Ward, the osteopath and part-time artist, who had brought the couple together.Ward died,an apparent suicide, before the end of the trial, and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan resigned a few months later. The nation was assured that there had been no damage to national security. It is clear now, that the public learned only a fraction of the truth. 'Honeytrap',in intelligence parlance,is a plan to entrap an espionage target using sex as the bait.In the light of compelling evidence that MI5 - used Ward and his girls as the means - seeking to lure Ivanov into defecting. The honey of sex was the trap for many more than Ivanov: Ward groomed beautiful young women to pleasure his influential and aristocratic friends.British Intelligence marked him as 'the provider of popsies for rich people' and they exploited his expertise for years. All this and much more is analysed here for the first ime. This book draws on the unpublished memoir of Stephen Ward, on official transcripts of his trial, hitherto withheld, and on a manuscript written by one of Ward's girls that the report to the Prime Minister omitted to name. It also reveals the oddest twist of all - that President Kennedy knew two of the girls, andthat the White House feared Britain's scandal would be used to compromise the President of the United States.
