The Hoods

by GREY, Harry

Condition: See description

New York: Crown Publishers, 1952. Hardcover. 8vo. Reddish cloth, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. 371pp. Very good/very good. Faint edgewear; jacket lightly edgeworn, with tiny chips at head of slightly sunned spine. A tight, attractive first edition of this early and influential gangster novel, whose front jacket panel warns matter-of-factly, "A notorious mob boss of the Syndicate tells the full inside story of hired killing and crime operations." Of course Sergio Leone's epic 1984 crime drama "Once Upon a Time in America" was based on this novel -- and this copy bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf are signatures of three of the film's cast members, each fine and each on a heavy stock 5" X 2 3/4" card, top to bottom: James Woods, who plays "Max" (in black ballpoint, dating the card 6 May 1981); Elizabeth McGovern, who plays "Deborah" (in blue fineline, dating the card 10 April 1988); and William Forsythe, who plays "Cockeye" (in black fineline, dating the card 18 January 1986). The original transmittal envelopes for all three are laid in -- the perfect bookmarks.
