Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1953. First Edition . Cloth. Near Fine/Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Coleman, Ralph Pallen [jacket]. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1953. First edition; the Little Brown first American edition preceded the Michael Brown first UK edition. Octavo, 325 pp. Aqua cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial jacket by Ralph Pallen Coleman. Book has previous owner's stamp on endpapers and a neat little old booksellers stamp, for the collector of those, else Near Fine - bright, tight and handsome. Scarce dustjacket is ragged at all edges, on spine slit, is price-clipped but was re-stamped with the $ 3.75 price; jacket is just good plus but essentially complete. Rare true first edition of C. S Forester's fifth Horatio Hornblower installment, in which that memorable character recives his first command, the 22-gun sloop Atropos. His first assigment is a bit staid: his ship will serve as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson. Shortly, however, the Atropos is part of the Mediterranean Fleet's harassment of Napoleon, recovering treasure that lies deep in Turkish waters and boldly challenging a Spanish frigate several times her size.
