London: George Newnes, 1902. FIRST EDITION, with associated AUTOGRAPH MATERIAL. Octavo, pp.359. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine and front, with a black stylised hound to front. Complete with the required sixteen plates by Sidney Paget. 'The Yew Alley' plate misbound, facing page 162 rather than 164. Housed in a fleece-lined cloth slipcase. Internally clean with just a little toning to the page edges, plate p.24 with some edge tears, minor cloth-bleed to rear endpaper. No inscriptions or bookplates. Cloth is rubbed to spine and covers, gilt dulled. This particular copy has further appeal via two added autographed items; affixed to the pastedown is a signed manuscript letter from publisher George Newnes to the office of the Speaker of the House of Commons, dated 17th Feb 1903, and loosely inserted is a printed card with the author's letterhead bearing his ink inscription 'With Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Compliments'.
