About This Item

London: The Francis Thompson Society., 1967. First Edition, First Impression. Quarto, original blue boards, gilt titles on spine. 67 pp. issued in a limited edition of 500 copies, this being copy No. 110. This copy is inscribed in pen on the title page "Henry Williamson for R. Dalby Hallowe'en 1967"; it is also signed in pen by the Editor, G. Krishnamurti, also dated 31.10.1967. Loosely laid in is a promotional flyer for the book, with the statement at the bottom "Published on 13th November, 1967 to mark the 60th anniversary of Thompson's death" - but the date has been crossed out and changed by hand to Oct 31, 1967. We do know that in early 1967 the Francis Thompson Society - under their President Henry Williamson - organised a Commemorative Exhibition of rare Thompsoniana connected with The Hound of Heaven held at Palace Court, London from January 21 - 27. We also know that a second exhibition was held later in the year courtesy of Hatchards, and that there were 25 copies of this book signed by Williamson at the request of bookseller Stephen Francis Clarke at this exhibition. We have had a copy of this "Signed Edition", those books were signed by Williamson (and only by Williamson) directly on the limitation leaf. In any event, this copy was inscribed at this exhibition / book launch by both Williamson and Krishnamurti, it comes from the estate of noted rare book collector Richard Dalby, and is a near fine copy (slight foxing to top page edges, cloth very slightly marked), without dust jacket, as issued.

¶ Quite a remarkable work. Prints the text of 'The Hound of Heaven', plus essays by Williamson; Dr. Fulton J. Sheen; Peter H. Butter; Doris M. Alexander; Paul van K. Thompson; & G. Krishnamurti; as well as having an Introduction by Krishnamurti and reproductions of Letters of Goodwill from Cardinal Amleto Giovanni Cicognani (Secretary of State of His Holiness The Pope on behalf of The Holy Father Pope Paul VI), His Holiness Jagadguru, & The Dalai Lama.
