About This Item

53 pages with tipped in plates. Quarto (10 1/4" x 7") bound in original publisher's pictorial map to covers in original plain white jacket. Speech by Charles J Jack on Re-Annexation of Texas. Edited with an introduction James C Martin. Limited to 375 copies. Edward Everett Hale was an American author, historian, and Unitarian minister, best known for his writings such as "The Man Without a Country", published in Atlantic Monthly, in support of the Union during the Civil War. He was the grand-nephew of Nathan Hale, the American spy during the Revolutionary War. As his ministerial skills improved so did his writing ability. More importantly, his mind and intellect matured, and the subjects that he wrote about broadened to include historical and moral matters. Such a publication was his March 1845 pamphlet, "A Tract for the Day: How to Conquer Texas, Before Texas Conquers Us," which was issued as Congress debated annexing Texas as a slave state. Hale argued that it should be admitted but as a free state. He was now an abolitionist. Condition: Jacket with closed tears and small chips else a near fine copy in a very good jacket.
