London: Quince Tree, 1992. First Edition. Signed by Author. (Kettering: The Quince Tree Press 1992). First UK Edition Thus. A Re-Issue. A PBO (issued without a D/W). A near fine copy. Formerly the property of Leila Berg, the British childrens author who wrote the "Nippers" series in the 1960s as a realistic and gritty alternative to Enid Blyton. She was a close friend of J L Carr who has written a 20-line inscription: "For Leila who like Steeple Sinderby, performed a feat beyond belief by writing a real story for very young children at (to fall back on school jargon) stage one of learning to read. Instead of beginning Here is Nip. This is Nip. Nip is a dog it boldly ordered Dad, Dad get out of bed which once I read to two boys. One whose Dad worked in a bank said He wouldnt get up because the rain fell on his head. The other, recognizing a glimpse of his own life was too convulsed wigth glee to answer. Jim. For Leila on the first day of the books re-publication as non-fiction. J L Carr".
