About This Item

1925. How the Story Grew" was a play by Orissa W. Gleason, published in 1909. Billed as "A novelty entertainment in one act for women only", it sets nine characters, sitting in a kitchen, washing dishes and talking. It was released in 1911 as a split reel along with the comedy "The Sleepy Tramps." This poster art is presumably advertising a staging by the Girls Friendly Society of the Episcopal Church, somewhere in the USA in about the mid 1920s, judging by the deco inspired artwork of a stylized parrot singing. Established in the 1870s in England, the society continues today with its aim to empower girls and young women. Here in the United States, there are active chapters in California, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. The title lettering is not completed, the words "Episcopal Church" visible in pencil only. Mounted on black board, 15x22". A little faint dusting otherwise bright.
