A unique publication for The Limited Editions Club, with this also being the first edition, written specifically for the members of LEC. Dean Mitchell provides 3 color etchings for the book. Wynton Marsalis brings a 3rd dimension, who composed a 30min interpretation of Angelou's as a celebration of Jazz. A CD of the composition, which includes Maya Angelou reading her poem is included in a special compartment of the case. The book was very well received by critics, Michael Kimmelman from the New York Times, dedicated almost the entire front page of the April 26th 2002 edition to Mitchell's art. Book comes in one volume 23 x 20 inches, with a CD by Wynton Marsalis and Maya Angelou. This copy being #249 of 400, signed by Angelou, Mitchell and Marsalis. New York: Baker & Godwin, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. 117 pages, Index. Inscribed: "To David C. Acton, with the esteem and respect of his friend, David M. Barnes, July 1864." Acton had been made President of the Board of Police Commissioners in New York in 1860, a position he held until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was replaced by John G. Bergen and John Kennedy who became incapacitated in July 1863 as the mob protesting the draft began to cause mayhem (burning down the Colored Orphan Asylum, p. 117). Acton re-assumed command for the next five days and did not sleep as he quelled the riot. He himself was left with severe health problems for the next five years. Pastedown on verso of Dedicatory page, handwritten note: "Times of August 16, 1863" with newspaper column printing letter to Gen. Harvey Brown which in the later reply from Gen. All pages of handmade paper and uncut, replete with linocuts taken directly from the blocks and in multiple colors, with the text letterpress, deeply printed on dampened paper with Baskerville type.
