Swift, the bookseller, to a customer, saying: "I have now been able to see Mr, Muir the authority on modern first editions and he assures me that there are not two issues of ' Human Bondage' The publishers assured him that as there were not enough advertisements for the whole edition some were issued without. A very good copy" First issue with the publishers monogram on the title page and ( help on page 257) with the words (London William Heinemann 1915) in small lettering at the bottom left side of the verso of the title page. Book is very tight and square, and totally unmarked except for a light pencil notation on front paste-down. Spine ends are slightly bumped and the rear paste-down has separated slightly from the text block. There are six pages of advertisements for the publishers up- coming books (1915) that are un-cut. An interesting printed note and thing of the past, at the beginning of the advertisements, " Mr. Heinemann will always be pleased to send periodically particulars of his forthcoming publications to any reader who desires them...." This very rare collectible is all original in very good + condition and has not been rebound. 648 pages + 6 pages of advertisements. Protected in Mylar
Synopsis
Of Human Bondage is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It is generally agreed to be his masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature, although Maugham stated, "This is a novel, not an autobiography, though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention. " Maugham, who had originally planned to call his novel Beauty from Ashes, finally settled on a title taken from Spinoza's Ethics
