Elizabeth Backhouse writes in the Preface that her late sister, Sarah, collected these verses (of which there are 58), primarily from the American Friends' Review and the rest "from our periodicals." Bookplate of Homewood Friends' Library on front pasted endpaper and a neatly penned inscription on the unprinted side of the front free endpaper which reads, "To Deborah E. Thomas, with dear love from her affectionate young friend Martha Braithwaite. 9 mos 1880." Laid into the book is a letter, dating from the 1950s (the book was withdrawn from the library in November 1955) from Jean Mason Smith librarian of the Homewood Friends' Library, returning the now withdrawn book to a family member, Dr. Thomas. (Miss Smith isn't sure Dr. Thomas will be interested and ends with this rather negative comment, " Please dispose of it if you do not care for it." ) A clean, neat copy - unmarked other than the inscription and bookplate. Pages, all edges with red tint, are near fine, light foxing to a few leaves. Bound in flexible boards covered in light brown paper with gilt and black stamping on front, blind embossed decorative rules stamped on rear board. Printed light brown endpapers. The front hinge is cracked and the binding is tender, but all pages are secured. Scarce. 4-3/4 x 6-1/2"; 118 pages. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
